Princess Theatre Melbourne Suburban Icon Poster
With its French-inspired facade, the Princess Theatre has been a star of Spring Street for nearly 170 years.
It began life in 1854 as an equestrian amphitheatre before its grand 1886 rebuild by William Pitt, which added marble staircases, a world-first retractable roof and electric stage lighting. Legend says the ghost of Frederick Federici, who died after playing Mephistopheles in Faust in 1888, still haunts the building.
A print for theatre lovers and anyone who remembers a standing ovation night on Spring Street.
